An LCD Television is composed of a matrix of thin-film transistors superimposed on a layer of liquid-crystal-filled cells.  Voltage from the thin-film transistors is applied to the liquid-crystal filled cells to cause the emission of light.  The entire package is sandwiched between two sheets of glass.

LCD Television technology has advanced greatly, particularly with respect to the reproduction of black levels.  Contrast ratios for LCD displays now reach up to 800:1.

Size is still an issue with respect to LCD Television.  While one can purchase a 50" Plasma Television for perhaps $5,000 (or less), a display of that size is not yet available in an LCD Television format.  Smaller sizes are therefore the rule when in comes to LCD Television.
